Derby newspaper article
- Derby
I am seeking any item relating to an accident which happened to GEORGE NELSON GRANT probably in the year 1867
My gt grandfather worked as a GPO member on the railway and on his retiral in 1867 it was mentioned that this was an early retirement due to his serious accident on the railway, seems to have affected his eyesight? Although I have his working record obtained from the GPO archives and his accident is mentioned as the reason for retirment, unfortunately they have given no details as to where when & how the accident happened, only that it was serious and that he received compensation in two lots, one for £40 and another for just over £40, this would have no doubt been a considerable sum in 1867.
I am hoping that this accident may have been mentioned in a local Derby newspaper of that year and wonder if anyone could offer to look this up in the local record office (I live in Essex and being disabled am unable to travel to look for myself) if anyone could offer to look for me, I would be "over the moon", I am writing up the details of my family history research in the form of a "book" and trying to find out as much as I can about my gt grandfather, he has provedd to be rather an elusive figure of some mystery, there are no relatives now living that could answer any questions about him, and nothing was ever spoken about him by my mother. My g,mother his daughter, died when I was still a child and there is much about her life I do not know, particularly about her father.
Around the year of the accident, he would have been living I assume, in Rose Hill Street, Derby, my g.mother was born there in 1874, previous to then, the family were living at Louden Street, which I believe would have been near the same area as Rose Hill?
The accident of course, may not have happened in the Derby area, but because he lived there I am hoping that there may have been a mention about him in a local paper.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Annie SHIELDS
- Derby
Annie Shields was my great great grandma. According to her wedding certificate she was born in 1862 and her father was Edward Shields, iron moulder. Annie was listed as a domestic servant in the 1881 census where she was living at Hilton Lane Hope Cottage, Prestwich, Lancashire 1341963 RG11 4033 78 8 named in this as Ann Shield aged 22 born in Derby.
Annie Shields registered the birth of her daughter, Mary Ann Shields on 27th September 1878 saying that Mary Ann was born on 3rd September 1878 at her grandad's (Edward Shields) house 150 Abbey Street, Derby and that Annie herself was living at this address. No name was given for her father. According to the family, Annie Shields wass working at the time as a domestic servant for a doctor.
Mary Ann Shields can be seen living with her grandad at 150 Abbey Street, Derby in the 1881 census RG11 3400 139 14 and in the 1891 census RG 12 2732 141 53 283. Mary Ann Shields eventually called herself Nellie Shields and married Noah Fletcher on 3rd June 1899 at the Presbyterian Church, Green Lane, Derby when her grandad, Edward Shields, signed the wedding certificate.
Please could you find where Annie Shields was living at the time of the 1871 census. Annie was not listed as living with her father in the 1861 census at Parliament Street, Derby RG9 2503 45 15 71. I don't think she had been born at this time. I hope to find her in service with the doctor, that according to family tradition was the father of her child, Mary Ann Shields, my great grandma. I have gone through the trade directories for Derbyshire contemporanious with Mary Ann Shields birth and noted down all the doctors in Derby. I have transfered this to an Access database.
Maybe the scandal was reported in the local newspapers. I have yet to search these.
Thank you.
