Lowdens from Cockermouth, Cumberland
- Cockermouth
I am doing research on the Lowden family that lived and possibly still do live in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England. The original family member to move there was Joseph Lowden in aprox. 1841 with his wife Sarah and first born Robert. They were all born in Antrim, Ireland. There are a total of 7 children in this family. I believe the family trade was building homes/plastering.
My grandfather is Joseph William Lowden born in Cockermouth, Cumberland in 1880 and my mother is June Ann Lowden born in Hounslow.
As I live in Australia it is hard for me to do any research in churches so any help at all is appreciated.

Bethwaite family of Cockermouth
- Cockermouth
My great-great-great grandfather was THOMAS BETHWAITE, b.1844, who went on to have 11 children with his wife RUTH HAWKINS. We are decended from his son DIXON BETHWAITE who himself had 9 children. We know that THOMAS BETHWAITE (1844) was the illigitimate son of DOROTHY DIXON (b.1837 circa) and her employer but can find no record of who this man was or the origins of the surname. Does anyone know of a male BETHWAITE in their family tree who may have fathered THOMAS in the mid 1840s?

William Davidson, Mary Ann Carruthers
- Cockermouth
Looking for genealogy on these names, they were Husband and wife and lived in Cockermouth in the late 1800's to the 1920's. Their children were James, Ethel (married to ? Hudson), Mary (married Will? Ingels)
Bethia, and John. James, John, and Bethia immigrated to the US in the 1906-1922 time frame. Mary and Ethel stayed in Cockermouth.
I believe that William Worked on the railroad somehow. Mary Ann and Her daughter Bethia may have had a bakery shop in the early 1900's. There is a referance to Holy Square as their home but I can not find that anywhere on a map.

John Barton 1816, Ann Sancton 1818
- Cockermouth
I am researching my brother-in-law's tree. He is descended from John Barton born ca 1816 who worked as a bleacher & lived mainly in Kirkgate. In 1838 he married Ann Sancton born ca 1818, daughter of Thomas Sancton born ca 1789 a woollen weaver & Ann born ca 1799. Their children were Thomas 1841, George 1844 (who married first Eleanor Armstrong from Carlisle then Matilda Beardsworth from Blackburn), John 1847, Joseph 1850 - 1859, Ann 1853, Elizabeth 1858. These children are taken from censuses so there may have been others who were born & died between. After Ann's death in 1859, John married Sarah Mitchell in 1860 & had more children. I would love any information on John's parents or other forebears, also the Sancton family. Many thanks.

Satterthwaite
- Cockermouth
I have got back to Benjamin Satterthwaite bKeswick , Cumberland married to Susan Heightman/Weightman. They had two daughters Isabella Satterthwaite born 1/05/1851 chris 08/06/1851 and Agnes Chris29/08/1853.
Isabella had at least 4 children, all without fathers names on their birth certs. Benjamin Satterthwaite born 07/04/1873, Margaret born 02/05/1877, Janet born 20/03/1879 and James born 03/01/1888 all in Cockermouth.
Agnes also had children with no fathers names. the only birth cert i have is for Robert Weightman Satterthwaite born 04/04/1877.
On the 1881 cencus there is also in the household Adam Johnston aged 44, stepson unmarried and David Collins aged 17.
On the 1871 census David Collins is down as Adopted son aged 7.
How could Isabella have all those children with no fathers or did they have the same fathers?
If anyone can point me in the right direction to solve this or if you have any connections i would be pleased to hear from you.

Casson's of Cockermouth
- Cockermouth
I am rather hoping that someone in the various Casson families might come to my rescue. I have a William Casson born in or around Cockermouth, somewhere between 1782 and 1786. He married Elizabeth (no maiden name) in 1803 and they had 7 children. I would like to know if this William fits in with anyone elses Family Tree and who his parents were.
I think I have found this William in 1851 as a widower and lodger living at 73 Kirkgate, Cockermouth. His DoB is given as 1783. Also in 1841 he was in Brewery Yard, Cockermouth with Elizabeth (I think she was one of his daughters), Mary his daughter in law and baby Mary his granddaughter. This time his DoB is given as 1786.
Any help would be much appreciated. Regards Lyn

Miller & Ladner Hatton
- Cockermouth
Hi
I'm looking for any information on the Miller Family, particularly Thomas Henry Miller (b 1892 Cockermouth) who married Laura Ladner Hatton (b 1897). They married in 1916. She however remarried in 1922 and I am trying to find out what happened to Thomas - I can't find any records regarding a divorce or his death (The Great War or otherwise). The unfortunate thing is that Thomas Miller is a really common name!
Any help would be appreciated.

Johnston
- Cockermouth
I am searching for information on Janet Johnston who was my g-g-grandmother who migrated to Australia on the Wistow Hall 1885. Her parents were Stephen Johnston(e)and Hannah Collister(Colester) who were married in 1844 Cockermouth. She came out with her daughter Hannah Payne Johnston aged 17. It seems she was unmarried but later married Thomas Bell in Ravenswood, Queensland. Hannah died aged 32 after giving birth to 5 children in 4 years, with pneumonia. Two of the children died when young. Janet (according to my mother aged 93) was a nurse or midwife. She raised her daughter's children, one of whom was my grandfather James Lane.
