Graham's in Cumberland. - Cockermouth
Knowing that there are an awful lot of Graham's in Cumberland I am hoping that there is someone who can help throw light on to some of my ancesters. I know that John Graham 1830 (Cockermouth) married Ann Williamson 1832 (Caldbeck) on 2nd Jan 1858. I believe that John's father was Joseph (1807) (Winscales) married Elizabeth Brough (abt 1807) at Bowness on Solway on 18th Dec 1828. Joseph's father was also called John abt 1781 married Jane Proud abt 1781 on the 18th Sept 1803. It is here that the line disappears. Did John & Jane Graham have any other children besides John Graham 1807? There is a possibility that there were two dughters, Sarah 1826 & Ann 1841 but either these dates are wrong or they are not their children!!! Is there anyone who can help on this line.

Surnames Linden & Swift In Cumberland and Durham - Cockermouth
My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Jane Swift (later Tuffy) (b.1869 Cockermouth. d.1954 Kidderminster). Her father was called Joseph Swift (a coalminer) and he married a Bridget Linden in 1866 in Cockermouth. My Gt. Gt. Grandmother was born on 31st December 1869. Sometime between the time she was born and the census of 1871 her father died. I found her mother (Bridget Swift) living with her two daughters as a lodger with a family with the name Ropson. So far I have been unable to find any trace of Bridget and her two daughters Louisa & Mary Jane on the 1881 census. I'm beginning to suspect that Bridget Swift died young aswell, which left her two young children orphaned. On the 1954 death certificate of my Great Great Grandmother Mary Jane Tuffy (nee Swift) it says that her maiden name was Hussible, but when I found her wedding certificate it said that her maiden name was Swift. I have also managed to find her birth certificate which was registered in Cockermouth. On the wedding certificate for Kidderminster in 1892 one of the witnesses to her marriage to Thomas Tuffy was a Rose Ann Hussible. I thought at first that maybe Mary Jane's mother (Bridget) had remarried, but Rose Ann Hussible's mother was called Mary Hussible. I have had no luck locating a death certificate for Bridget Swift (formerly Linden). I'm currently waiting for the rest of the 1861 cesus to be put on line so I can find out a bit more information about her family background. According to the marriage certificate for Cockermouth 1866, Joseph Swift was a coalminer and so was his father (also called Joseph Swift). Bridget Linden's father was called James Linden (he was a labourer). I haven't managed to find the death certificate of Joseph Swift, but on the 1871 census where I found his wife & children it says she was a widow. He would have only been in his early 30's when he died. It may be that he died down a coal mine? But this is only a theory I have no evidence as yet to back it up. Any information would be of great interest Best Wishes Kevin

They had a son, Dennis is Selby north yorkshire in 1849. Sadly Mary Ann died in York in 1850. Dennis was placed with a family as nurse child and that is where my trail for his father William dies. Where did he go? Did he remarry? Did he have more children? I estimate that he was born on or around 1826. Any help please would be great. Vanessa
