"George Rooke, an eminent Quaker minister of Ireland, son of Thomas, was born at Boltonwood (parish of Boulton) in Cumberland, England, in 1652. He lost his father when he was eleven years old, and his mother was left with several small children to support. At sixteen he was apprenticed to Thomas Drewry, a carpenter and joiner, one of the Society of Friends, and became a member of society. At about the age of twenty-five he appeared in the ministry and travelled much in that service. In 1686, he removed to Limerick, Ireland, and married Joan the daughter of John Cooke. In 1693, he settled in Dublin. His wife died there, 7 Mo. 17, 1737 and was buried in the Friends' burial ground on Cork Street, aged eighty four. He spent his declining years with his widowed daughter Rachel Carlton and her children, and died 12 Mo 7, 1742. --Rutty 334-7; Leadbeater, 212-226."

Atkinson
- Brampton
looking for any information on Robert Atkinson, his ancestry and descendants, of which I am one.
Robert ATKINSON
Birth: 10 FEB 1766 in Long Marton, Brampton, Westmoreland, England
Christening: 4 DEC 1766 Long Marton, Brampton, Westmoreland, England
Death: 13 SEP 1839 in Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Note:
!from his granddaughter Priscilla Cross's notes, they left Kirkbythore, England 5/10/1822 and came to Baltimore, Maryland 7/10/1822-I believe they were on the Mary, but those records for Baltimore for the time period in which they arrived were burned in a fire in the early half of the 1900's. all I have is an index from "Passenger Arrivals in the Port of Baltimore, Maryland", which lists four R. Atkinson's and one Rob.Atkinson. there is apparently no way of ever being certain.
buried at Woodward Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, Pennsylvania
another date for marriage 11/10/1800

Graham, Tiffin & Carruthers families - Cumberland
- Brampton
My great x4 grandfather was David GRAHAM who was born around 1834, probably in Cumberland, and possibly in the area of Kirklinton. I dont have any details of his wife, but he had a son, John GRAHAM, born c1854 in Kirklinton. John was a farm labourer and married Elizabeth TIFFIN in 1874 in Wigton. Elizabeth was born in Cotehill, Wetheral in 1854. They had two children, Jacob (my great great grandfather - 1874) and Margaret (1876). Both children were born in Kingstown, Cumberland (now a part of Carlisle) and registered with the surname GRAHAM, but then theres a mystery. They both subsequently were always referred to by their mothers maiden name (e.g. Jacob TIFFIN not Jacob GRAHAM) and Elizabeth seems to have soon been in a relationship (married perhaps, I dont know) with Robert CARRUTHERS (born c1855 in Brampton) and is listed as the mother of Roberts 6 children born between 1883 and 1893 in Brampton (Joseph c1833, Robert c1886, Elizabeth c1888, Beatrice c1890, Percy c1893, Sileva c1895). So one possibility is that John GRAHAM died between his daughter Margaret being born in 1876 and Elizabeths first child by Robert CARRUTHERS being born in 1883. In which case why change Jacob and Margarets surname to her maiden name TIFFIN? Why not leave it as GRAHAM or change it to CARRUTHERS? Perhaps there was some scandal and Elizabeth decided to delete all reference to John GRAHAM by changing his childrens names. I dont know but Id quite like to find out! Is there anyone with information which might clarify this, or with a suggestion as to where I can go to find out? In any case, since John GRAHAM is my biological great x3 grandfather (as far as I know maybe he found out he wasnt Jacob and Margarets father and he forced the name change then disappeared - maybe thats the scandal!) then Id like to find out more about him and his ancestry. Id also love to find out more about the CARRUTHERS family, who are descended from my great x3 grandmother.

Sands Cottages, Brampton, Cumbria
- Brampton
I am trying to track down information on these cottages (1 of them mine). I believe they were built in the 16/17 Century as weavers' workshops and dwellings, and possibly tied latterly to the Carlisle/Carlyle estate. There do not appear to be any title deeds extant, but I haven't yet started researching in any great depth. If anyone can help I'd be grateful, similarly for any useful URLs that miht contain old maps, documents, or other such materials.
