John Scott
- Keswick
My grandfather was John Harvey Scott, born in Keswick in 1889 to John Scott and Mary Scott. John's father was Jonathan Scott and his mother was Mary Gate Scott. Mary died shortly after John's birth and Jonathan then married Mary Folder and had 7 more children. Jonathan's parents were John Scott and Jane Iredale Scott and they were married in 1828. Jonathan was a farmer and then auctioneer and living on Lake Rd.
From 1900-1914 he owned the George Hotel in Keswick. His brother John married Sarah Crosthwaite and he owned the King's Arms Hotel in Keswick and the Lodore Hotel in Borrowdale from around 1871 to 1894. Having trouble tracing back from John Scott and Jane Iredale. Also would like to here from anyone related.

Thomas Smith of Skiddaw Lodge Keswick
- Keswick
My great grandfather Thomas Smith retired from Leigh Lancashire to Keswick. I understand that he owned the following properties, Skiddaw Lodge, The Borrowdale Hotel and Lattrigg House. He helped raise money for Fritz Park and was Keswick rep on the Cockermouth Boadrd of Guardians. He worked for the highways department, apparently improving the road through Borrowdale in about 1882. He also with others lead a protest to ensure that the open access to Skiddaw was provided, and was taken to court in Carlisle for this. He was successful but it cost £2000!
Anyone who can help me with local information on the properties, especially early photos,or who can provide any more information about Thomas Smith I would be greatful

Kirklinton
- Kirklinton
WAUGH - William and family from Cumberland, England. 1881 Census indicates he was born about 1802 in Kirklinton and death certificate shows he died 12 June 1882 in Plumbland. He married Sarah FOX in Carlisle 1853-1856. Their six children - four sons and two daughters - were born in Cumberland. Thomas (1859-1937) married Margaret ROBINSON, Joseph (1861-1931) married Mary Ellen TODHUNTER, Andrew (1867-1933) married Eliza Jane MONTGOMERY. They all emigrated to Australia between 1886-1905 and all died in Australia. Sarah emigrated about 1891 and it is possible that youngest son, Henry (1873-?) came with her. She died in Wollongong, NSW, Australia in 1901. Her death certificate also shows a daughter Elizabeth (1860-?) and unknown female (1860/1867-?). Any information appreciated.

Graham, Tiffin & Carruthers families - Cumberland
- Kirklinton
My great x4 grandfather was David GRAHAM who was born around 1834, probably in Cumberland, and possibly in the area of Kirklinton. I dont have any details of his wife, but he had a son, John GRAHAM, born c1854 in Kirklinton. John was a farm labourer and married Elizabeth TIFFIN in 1874 in Wigton. Elizabeth was born in Cotehill, Wetheral in 1854. They had two children, Jacob (my great great grandfather - 1874) and Margaret (1876). Both children were born in Kingstown, Cumberland (now a part of Carlisle) and registered with the surname GRAHAM, but then theres a mystery. They both subsequently were always referred to by their mothers maiden name (e.g. Jacob TIFFIN not Jacob GRAHAM) and Elizabeth seems to have soon been in a relationship (married perhaps, I dont know) with Robert CARRUTHERS (born c1855 in Brampton) and is listed as the mother of Roberts 6 children born between 1883 and 1893 in Brampton (Joseph c1833, Robert c1886, Elizabeth c1888, Beatrice c1890, Percy c1893, Sileva c1895). So one possibility is that John GRAHAM died between his daughter Margaret being born in 1876 and Elizabeths first child by Robert CARRUTHERS being born in 1883. In which case why change Jacob and Margarets surname to her maiden name TIFFIN? Why not leave it as GRAHAM or change it to CARRUTHERS? Perhaps there was some scandal and Elizabeth decided to delete all reference to John GRAHAM by changing his childrens names. I dont know but Id quite like to find out! Is there anyone with information which might clarify this, or with a suggestion as to where I can go to find out? In any case, since John GRAHAM is my biological great x3 grandfather (as far as I know maybe he found out he wasnt Jacob and Margarets father and he forced the name change then disappeared - maybe thats the scandal!) then Id like to find out more about him and his ancestry. Id also love to find out more about the CARRUTHERS family, who are descended from my great x3 grandmother.
