Parents of Robert Edgar - Keekle
I am tracing my family through the Edgar line, but have come to a standstill with Robert Edgar who (according to the 1881 census) was born in Parton in 1844. I would like to find out the name of his father - I believe his mother's name was Ann and she was born in Blaydon. I am not sure where they married (if indeed they did) but I would appreciate details of that also if it is in the Whitehaven area. Many thanks

German Miners C1567 - Keswick
From Calendar of Cecil Papers Vol 1
page 345
1567/05/31 Daniel Hechstetter to the Queen.
Expresses his gratification at hearing that her Majesty had
obtained her right against the Earl of Northumberland as tothe matter of metals.
Maintains the Queen's right to copper, inasmuch as it is found
amalgamated with gold and silver in the crude state.Sends a
piece of metal which was lately found and pending the litigation
was in the keeping of the Earl;this contains gold, silver, copper
and lead, from which Her Majesty can easily see that these metals
cannot be separated otherwise than by fire.Trusts that these
matters may be brought to a satisfactoryissue.

Kirklinton - Kirklinton
WAUGH - William and family from Cumberland, England. 1881 Census indicates he was born about 1802 in Kirklinton and death certificate shows he died 12 June 1882 in Plumbland. He married Sarah FOX in Carlisle 1853-1856. Their six children - four sons and two daughters - were born in Cumberland. Thomas (1859-1937) married Margaret ROBINSON, Joseph (1861-1931) married Mary Ellen TODHUNTER, Andrew (1867-1933) married Eliza Jane MONTGOMERY. They all emigrated to Australia between 1886-1905 and all died in Australia. Sarah emigrated about 1891 and it is possible that youngest son, Henry (1873-?) came with her. She died in Wollongong, NSW, Australia in 1901. Her death certificate also shows a daughter Elizabeth (1860-?) and unknown female (1860/1867-?). Any information appreciated.

Graham, Tiffin & Carruthers families - Cumberland - Kirklinton
My great x4 grandfather was David GRAHAM who was born around 1834, probably in Cumberland, and possibly in the area of Kirklinton. I don’t have any details of his wife, but he had a son, John GRAHAM, born c1854 in Kirklinton. John was a farm labourer and married Elizabeth TIFFIN in 1874 in Wigton. Elizabeth was born in Cotehill, Wetheral in 1854. They had two children, Jacob (my great great grandfather - 1874) and Margaret (1876). Both children were born in Kingstown, Cumberland (now a part of Carlisle) and registered with the surname GRAHAM, but then there’s a mystery. They both subsequently were always referred to by their mother’s maiden name (e.g. Jacob TIFFIN not Jacob GRAHAM) and Elizabeth seems to have soon been in a relationship (married perhaps, I don’t know) with Robert CARRUTHERS (born c1855 in Brampton) and is listed as the mother of Robert’s 6 children born between 1883 and 1893 in Brampton (Joseph c1833, Robert c1886, Elizabeth c1888, Beatrice c1890, Percy c1893, Sileva c1895). So one possibility is that John GRAHAM died between his daughter Margaret being born in 1876 and Elizabeth’s first child by Robert CARRUTHERS being born in 1883. In which case why change Jacob and Margaret’s surname to her maiden name TIFFIN? Why not leave it as GRAHAM or change it to CARRUTHERS? Perhaps there was some scandal and Elizabeth decided to delete all reference to John GRAHAM by changing his children’s names. I don’t know but I’d quite like to find out! Is there anyone with information which might clarify this, or with a suggestion as to where I can go to find out? In any case, since John GRAHAM is my biological great x3 grandfather (as far as I know – maybe he found out he wasn’t Jacob and Margaret’s father and he forced the name change then disappeared - maybe that’s the scandal!) then I’d like to find out more about him and his ancestry. I’d also love to find out more about the CARRUTHERS family, who are descended from my great x3 grandmother.
