Plant family - Birkenhead
Searching for the story of Mary Ellen Plant. Mary was born in December 1849. Her mother was Elizabeth Plant, nee Wilson/Willson and her father is given as a Richard Plant on her birth certificate. Address is given as 9 Wood Street, Birkenhead. The problem is that Elizabeth's husband was called JAMES Plant and had been tragically killed by a falling crane on Bidston Hill in 1845. They had married in Bidston in 1841. The Parish Baptism records only record Elizabeth's name, not that of a father. We do not know where James came from, he was not local and we cannot find any trace of him prior to his marriage to Elizabeth in 1841 when he was of 'full' age and living in Bidston. James and 'Betsy' appear on the 1841 census in Noctorum. A Jane Plant's death is recorded in Wallasey aged 0 in 1842, born in1841 - their child? Another child, William was born in 1843/4 in Bidston, father James, Mother Elizabeth, who in 1851 is living with his Wilson grandmother, Sarah and Uncle Joseph. Grandfather William has died. James' father was also James and also a labourer. Parish records do not list the birth of a James or Richard Plant, only his marriage to Elizabeth. James was 26 when he was killed so had been born in approximately 1819. After the birth of Mary Ellen Elizabeth is listed in the 1851 census as a visitor with the McGregor family at 23 Cleveland Street, Birkenhead with Mary Ellen but not William who is with her parents. There is no Richard. In 1861 Elizabeth marries Thomas Gregson. She is 39 and a widow, he is 48 and a widower. They are together on the 1861 census with his children, Anne, John and William. Mary, now going by the name Ellen, aged 17, marries William Holliday in Liverpool in 1866, giving James Plant as her father's name. Both give Upper Milk Street as their address. They are back in Birkenhead in 1868 when their son, John, is born and she still goes by the name Ellen. We really want to know who Mary Ellen's father was - the mysterious Richard. Was there a brother? We can't find him anywhere. Did she just invent the name for registration purposes? Her occupation on the Parish records is given as 'Servant' but we don't know exactly what that may have meant and it seems clear that Mary Ellen's illegitimacy was a problem since no marriage seems to have taken place before or after her birth but she then used James' name to legitimise herself on her marriage. Descendents of Mr Gregson may have more information since they grew up with Mary Ellen. We don't know why William Holliday and Mary Ellen were in Liverpool when they married but they were still living in Birkenhead for the 1901 census with 5 of their children. William Plant never seems to have lived with Mary Ellen after the death of his father, possibly because she had to work and couldn't take care of him and his Grandparents took over his care. Where are his descendents and what is his story? We don't know what happened to Elizabeth between the death of James in 1845 and the 1851 census after Mary Ellen's birth. Any information?
