Lea's of Cheshire - Saighton
I'm looking in particular for info about my GGgrandfather Thomas Lea who in the 1861 census was resident at Huyton Lancs., but was born in Saighton Cheshire in 1822. I think he married a Mary Ann Pugh (b1822 Shrewsbury)in 1846. In Saighton I think he may have been a farmer and small salt mine owner (which were very common in the area in those days) and moved to Huyton were he was a farmer & small colliery owner. This move from salt to coal was probably due to Cheshire salt becoming unprofitable at the time due to overproduction from to many salt mines. One of his sons Alderman John Lea (my Ggrand uncle) became Lord Mayor of Liverpool 1904/5 and was married to Isabella Mclaren Evans. The Evans family were very large salt mine owners in Cheshire who also moved into Lancashire coal. So any info. on Cheshire Evans's and Shropshire Pughs would be interesting.

Wells, Knott And Simms. - Sale
My Aunt died around two years ago at Hucclecote (Gloucester)and we picked up some of her personal effects from a local solicitor.
We went through some of them only recently.
Amongst them was a box of old photos.
They have no connection with our family and assumedly belonged to someone who died around the same time in the same area.
The names on the photographs are largely Wells, Knott and Simms.
The locations are Gloucester, Belfast, Richmond, Warrington, Sale and Epsom.
There are several photos of family members in the RN.
If anyone can help me put these family memories into the right hands I would be very much obliged. If they would contact me,
preferably with some Christian names to cross-refer, then I can supply more detailed information. 7/9/02

BROOKS Family - Sale
Hoping to contact somebody researching the BROOKS family of Sale - particularly interested in establishing a link to the BROOKS DOXEY factory and to Derbyshire:
Samuel Brooks owned 628 acres of Sale by 1846, almost a third of the town's area. He had made his fortune as a banker in Manchester and astutely foresaw the need for suburban residential land for the burgeoning class of Manchester industrialists. In 1859 he agreed terms with the Manchester, South Junction, and Altrincham Railway Company for land on which the MSJAR could build a new station to serve his select development on Brooklands Road. Brooks's name was also given to the station, which remains today the Brooklands Metrolink Station on Marsland Road.
William Cunliffe Brooks (1819-1900)
William Cunliffe Brooks was the son of Samuel Brooks. He became MP for Altrincham and Sale (1886-92). His many benefactions to Sale include the fountain on Ashton Lane, and Brooks's Institute on Carrington Lane.
