Haddock family
- Halton
GGG grandmother Ann Haddock, born 1841, married Edward Armstrong from Northumberland in Connecticut in 1859. Her parents were Benjamin Haddock (born around 1814) and Elizabeth Rowbotham, who appear in the Censuses from 1841 in Runcorn and Halton. Siblings Edward (born 1836) and John Wesley (1844). Cousins Sarah Ann and Martha J lived with the family some of the time. Ann and Edward travelled back and forth to the USA in the 1860s; their daughter Martha is described in the 1861 Census as an American British Subject because she was born in Portland, Connecticut. The next two sons were born in Cheshire. Am very interested in the Haddock family and any connections with quarrying / stone masonry and also connections with the US.

Handley Family
- Halton
I am seeking information about a John Handley who may have been a Farmer and who may have been born circa 1790 somewhere in Cheshire, perhaps near to Halton or to Runcorn. His son William, who was a Butcher, married Martha Miller in Manchester in 1840.
|
|
Miller-Handley family
- Halton
I am seeking information about a Samuel Miller who may have been a Farmer and may have been born circa 1790 in Cheshire, near to Halton or Runcorn. This Samuel was the father of Martha who was born between 1815-1821 and who married William Handley, Butcher, at Manchester Cathedral in 1840. Both he and William's father John Handley, appear to have been alive at the time of the wedding. Moreover I cannot find Elizabeth Miller, who may have been William or Martha's sister, on the 1841 census; and I know that she was alive in 1851 & 1861 as she was recorded in both those censuses. Or she may have been Martha's mother, as a Samuel and Elizabeth Miller appear to have had several children christened in Halton, Cheshire, including a Martha.

Royle, Alice born abt. 1859, Hartford Cheshire
- Hartford
Am researching my wife's family tree and have hit a brick wall. I can not find any evidence of registration of Alice's birth nor her baptism nor of her parents. Alice Royle states in several census returns from 1881 on that she had been born in Hartford, near Northwich around 1860, and in two marriage declarations that her father was a James Royle, journeyman joiner. Alice had an interesting history.. She is found as a child 'nurse' aged 11 in Northwich in 1871 living with a newly married couple who have a baby.
Family tradition states that Alice worked as a domestic servant at the 'big house' near Northwich or Winsford where she fell pregnant following an affair with the son of the titled family owners. All birth certificates available leave name of father unknown. In 1881 she is found living in Northwich Workhouse with her one year old infant girl, Florence. Workhouse records show that Alice had an alias - 'Alice Higgins'. Why did she adopt another name?
Within the next four years she had two more children all born in the workhouse. The second little child died before the age of two but the third, a little boy, survived and Alice and her two children are next recorded when Alice married a local widower, John Latham in Over Congregational Church in 1889. John died two years later and Alice soon married again this time to a John Buckley in Wharton in 1893.
I should love to know if anyone can help me unravel the mysteries of Alice's early life and her parentage. Her first-born illegitimate daughter proved to be highly intelligent and, in spite of Alice's poor background, was provided with a private governess. Who paid for this I wonder?
By the way, have already sent for and discounted the Alice Royles born and registered: Northwich (Winsford) June 1857 8a 248; Northwich (Weaverham) 1861 8a 212; Northwich (Barnton/Weaverham) 1859 8a 230.
All helpful comments and ideas most welcome.

BROMFIELD of Cheshire
- Haslington
Peter BROMFIELD, a carpenter, was born circa 1765 in Elton. In circa 1799 he married Hannah (surname unknown) and they had three children all baptised in HAslington.....George (my direct ancestor) Charles and HAnnah. They resided in Winterley, close to Winterley Ponds. Neither Charles nor HAnnah married. Hannah (senr) and son Charles are buried in the churchyard at HAslington. Hannah moved to 0xfordshire where she died in 1882.
George, a school teacher, married Sarah Smith in 1823. He died in Leftwich where he was a school teacher.
Peter died in 1838 and is buried in the same unmarked grave as his son, George(died 1839) in churchyard at Davenham. From George's Will of 1839 know that George owned property in Winterley that was leased out on a yearly agreement to a Peter Proudlove.(refer tithe map of 1841) Understand that the Proudlove family now own this land today.
Any information on above would be greatly appreciated.

Aspden Aspen Aspin Hargraves
- Hazel Grove
My GGGrandfather Thomas Aspden is on the 1871 census for Hazel Grove (Stockport) with wife Ann and three daughters. In 1881 He has moved to Torkington (Hazel Grove)and is with two youngest daughters Ann Aspin and Betty Aspen. On the census they ofcourse all have same Aspin spelling for surnames. Thomas listed as a widower - I have searched line by line Death entries from quarter before the 1871 census to the quarter after the 1881 and cannot find a death - nor a burial or such listed.
Does the name Ann Aspden / Aspin / Aspen nee Hargraves mean anything to anyone. It is a complete mystery
