From Parliamentary papers - Report of the Inspector of Prisons.
p 179-181 Ely Franchise Gaol.
The prison is situated in Gaol Street the building and site being
the property of the See of Ely....
It is made use of for the confinement of debtors, and of prisoners
for trial at the Sessions and Assizes.
Keeper is 71 years of age and was appointed in 1803 by Bp of Ely
Chaplain is a Minor Canon of the Cathedral - salary #60 p.a.
Matron - salary #5 per annum.

There exists a practice in the Isle of Ely, of conveying prisoners
to and from the Quarter Sessions holden at Wisbeach and Ely, in
open carts, hired for the purpose, a...

Ely In 1836 - Ely
From Annual Report of Inspectors of Prisons
p 183-186 Ely House of Correction
This Prison in conjunction with a Sessions House was built in
1821, at an expense of £11,176 It is also a House of Correction
for debtors under sentence of the Court of Requests in the Isle

Debtors - Courts of Requests, by an Act of Parliament passed 1778

the recovery of debts not exceeding 40 shillings, and on non-
payment of the same, the defendants are subject to imprisonment
in the nearest House of Correction for 20 days, if the debt is
under 20 shillings and 40 days if above.
By this Actextending over an agricultural district, some of the
prisoners are brought to the prisons at Ely and Wisbeach, for
distances of 14 or 15 miles, for debts, frequently not exceeding
3 shillings, which are swelled in consequenceof the necessary
expenses to 6 or 7 times their original amount.
