Allen Frank - Family Of
- Speen
Please can you help me? I am trying to trace my ancestors in order to draw up a family tree. My Father came from the Greenham/Newbury area. I have his birth certificate which states
Born 29 May 1907 Hillsden, Oxford Street U.D.
Name Frank Allen
Father John Cope
Occupation Coachman (domestic)
Mother Rosa Bessie Cope formerly ALLEN
Residence Shaw House Stables, Shaw, Newbury
Registered Birth 2 August 1907 Newbury Berkshire
I have been told that Frank was brought up by his Grandfather ? Allen on Knights Bridge View Farm, Crookham Common. I cannot find any trace of this farm in all my searches.
I also know that Grandfather Allen ( who I never met) had several other children, Lydia, Sally, Bessie, Alice, Lucy and 2 boys, unfortunately I do not know of the birth order or what the boys were called.
Lucy married a George Webber and had 2 children, Millicent and Fred. As a child I called Millicent Aunty Milly and visited her and her father quite often as they had moved to my then home town of Abingdon.
Frank Allen married Annie Pearce of Abingdon, in 1936 and they had 1 daughter, me Margaret. He died in 1980. On the marriage certificate his father was listed as Fred Allen.

washbourn/e
- Stanford Dingley
I am researching the Washbourn/e family who farmed at Stanford Dingley in the mid 19th century. John Washbourn was married to Eliza Reeve and they were at Field Farm on the 1851 census, where they had 2 of their children, John Hillier Reeve Washbourn and Sarah Ellen. John's father was also John Washbourn and his mother was Harriet Mildenhall from Hungerford, Berks. He was born in Inkpen, Berks in 1826 where his parents farmed c1825 - 1841. His father inherited Overtown Farm in Wroughton Wilts in 1841 when his uncle (also John) died (he had no children). His other uncle was Abraham White Washbourn and his two uncles were bequeathed Overtown by their father Thomas to manage together. From this it would seem that Abraham had died before his brother John in 1841, but I don't know for sure. And I am quite interested to find out about Abraham and whether he married and had a family. By the 1861 census John and Eliza were in Wroughton Village farming (John lists himself as a farmer, miller and baker), but in between they had been to Newbury where they had had two more children Tom and Elizabeth. Their daughter Eliza was born in Wroughton 5 months before the census and this suggests that they had not long moved there.

puzey, Pusey, Church
- Stanford in the Vale
Several Puzeys and Churches moved from Berkshire to London and, in the 1840s and 1850s, to Vermilion County Illinois. They were centered around West Challow and Stanford in the Vale. As far as I can tell these Puzeys were not part of the family that owned Pusey House. I have the Puzey genealogy fairly set with only a few questions, but I'm baffled at who Henry Church is. He married Sophia Puzey in 1832 in London. He appears to be related to several London-born Churches such as Adolphus Bellingham Church and George William Frederick Church, who also emigrated around the same time. Any help?

STRONG Stanford
- Stanford in the Vale
We are looking for a recorded birth of Justus Corderoy or Strong about 1833. He was the illegitimate son of Joseph Corderoy, miller of Blewbury, and possibly the child of a STRONG. Martha STRONG was Joseph's housekeeper for many years, and she came from Stanford, born about 1788, but her age is such that if she had a daughter, then the daughter is the more likely mother. She is recorded as of Stanford, so we need to check for a birth there about 1778. If her daughter was Justus Strong's mother then the daughter would have been born from 1800 onwards. Justus was recorded in the Parish records as STRONG, but census returns and the later family as CORDEROY. Ideas?

Greenaways of Steventon
- Steventon
I'm descended from Thomas Greenaway (Steventon, Berkshire; born about 1700, wife: Anne?); his son Benjamin (Steventon, Berk., about 1730, wife: Mary Brooks); his son Joseph (Steventon, Berk., about 1764, wife: Ann Phillips); and his son James (East Hendred, Berk., about 1810). James was married to Susannah/Susanna Cue in East Hendred, Berk., in 1830. They moved to Canada with their children (Woodstock, Ontario area). I found a Canadian record listing James' wife as "Susan", with children Wellington, Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Harrieth. Eventually, James married Christina McKay (what happened to Susannah?). James and Christina had Joseph, Hector, and John (Jack) (my grandfather), and others. John (born: 1860, died: 1946-7) was estranged from his birth family; my mother has very little family history to pass on. My information comes from the internet as well as a descendant of the James/Susannah union. John was also married to a Tracey Casey in Ontario in 1882; any children? Not 100% sure of all my info; does anyone have anything to share? Any "relatives" out there?

SLATTERS marriage look up plse
- Steventon
If anyone has access to a Berkshire marriage index, would it be possible to look up the marriage of Thomas Slatter (sometimes shown as Slater) to Elizabeth. Thomas appears to have been born about 1761 and Elizabeth abt 1771. I believe she was from Drayton Berkshire. I am particularly interested in finding out where Thomas came from, he may have been born outside Berkshire. Thomas and Elizabeth lived in Steventon and had six children, one of them James (b 1807 d 1890) was my g g grandfather. He married Ann Mills in 1832 in Steventon and they had 9 children. One of those, Elizabeth Slatter was my g grandmother. She was born in Steventon in 1837 married Samuel Jordan in Headington Oxfordshire. She lived in Dorchester, Oxon, Esher, Kingston and Merton in Surrey before arriving in Battersea between 1877 and 1881. She lived in Battersea until her death in 1893. Elizbeth married for a second time in the 1880s to a Francis McCormack.
